What are your non negotiables, [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]? ✨

Non negotiables

I’ve been having to draw (and redraw) a lot of boundaries recently. It’s something I’ve honed pretty well over the years!

But people still overstep them all the time. And they have to be re drawn.

It got me thinking about a conversation I had with my coach, quite a while ago now, about boundaries, after someone had been pushing at one of mine. I was struggling for a way forward, and trying to work out where there was “give” – i.e. where I could negotiate, and where I could not.

She asked me the question “what are your non-negotiables?”.

It was one of those coaching questions that kind of stops you in your tracks.

Those questions that make you realise – actually, I need to think about this, so my boundaries are easier to set in future.

Of course, it depends on the situation, but some of my non negotiables would be:

  • I never book social things that don’t involve my son on the weekends or weekdays he’s with me – we never have babysitters unless it’s a one off, work related, can’t be changed and I’ll lose income if I do, kind of thing.
  • I have one night per week which is totally dedicated to me and my own self care.
  • I don't go to supermarkets unless I absolutely have to. 🤣

Non negotiables often come about because of a bad experience – for example, my coach shared with me that she never went shopping on a Saturday morning because she struggled with the noise and busy atmosphere, and it gave her panic attacks. So it became a non-negotiable that she didn’t shop on Saturdays, and she got her Saturday mornings back too!

Sometimes when we have a bad experience, or we struggle or dislike something, we just continue to do it.

Sometimes it’s because we fear upsetting others, sometimes we just don’t think we have a choice.

Consider this your signed permission slip to stop doing something you really never wanted to anyway – and make it a non negotiable!

I’m keen to hear how you get on, hit reply and let me know.

What's your purpose? I’ve been thinking a lot about my purpose in life lately. I’ll tell you about mine in a sec, but first, why is it even important? You might have noticed this basic fact – with your friends, kids/partner if you have them, colleagues, employees – if someone knows why they are doing something, they’re more likely to do it. In my previous role as an HR consultant and trainer, I used use the example of a factory production line. If you say to an employee “put this bit of metal...
